Make a Joyful Noise
Out of the African-American experience in this country, spiritual and gospel music was born; moving and beautiful music celebrating spirit, faith and the capacity of human beings to overcome adversity. The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, singing spiritual and gospel music for almost 30 years, uses this music to help people pray, celebrate, be touched and to heal. The choir also sends a message of hope that people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, races, sexual orientations, religions and ideas can create something beautiful together. The choir owes the power of it's song to director Terrance Kelly, bringing together his gospel, jazz and opera talents and expertise to write, arrange and orchestrate the incredible sound that has touched hearts and been a balm to spirits worldwide. How can music that comes from such pain lead to such beauty and joy? What does Terrance have to share from 30 years leading such a wide array of people into one voice? What has kept this choir strong?
