Ep: 1900 Dale T. Umetsu MD - Beyond Avoidance
Imagine fearing that a single bite of food could send your child to the emergency room—or threaten their life. For families navigating severe food allergies, this fear is an everyday reality. For too long, food allergies were viewed as conditions to manage through caution and avoidance, rather than urgent challenges requiring scientific breakthroughs. Dale T. Umetsu MD dared to challenge this perspective. Concerned by the rising prevalence of food allergies in children and their potentially devastating consequences, he set out to understand why these reactions were increasing and uncover new ways to protect vulnerable patients. A renowned physician and researcher, Dr. Umetsu served as Chief of Allergy and Immunology and tenured Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University before joining Harvard Medical School as the Prince Turki bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud Professor of Pediatrics. Today, he continues advancing the field as a biotechnology consultant and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California.
