ABOUT DR ROBERT OKIN
Dr. Robert Okin is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine. He has served as an expert consultant with DRI for almost 20 years. He served as DRI’s lead psychiatric expert on technical assistance projects and investigative missions for almost 20 years in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine. In his book, Robert L. Okin, MD focuses on recognizing our common humanity with the homeless as the crucial first step in solving the problem of homelessness. He spent two years on the streets of San Francisco talking to homeless people, and later returned to follow up on their situation. Again and again, he was struck by the “bravery and tenacity” of individuals who wind up homeless.
