As the defense begins its case, Moby tells UnchainedTV that Chicken Rescue Trial defendant Zoe Rosenberg is in the company of Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Now it’s the Defense’s turn as the Chicken Rescue Trial of 23-year old animal cruelty investigator Zoe Rosenberg enters its 16th day. It’s a case that’s riveted the nation. Some say it’s also putting industrialized animal agriculture on trial. Members of the animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) have attended the trial daily to support Rosenberg and her legal team, which includes Chris Carraway of the Animal Activist Legal Defense Project and Kevin Little.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports, “Some of those spectators were in tears when Little showed the jury a picture of the ‘condemnation pot,’ which he said is where all chickens Petaluma Poultry deems not suitable for human consumption end up. He went on to display video of chickens flapping their wings as they hung upside down in a slaughter line.”

Rosenberg faces about half a decade in prison after rescuing 4 chickens from a truck at the slaughterhouse in June of 2023. The total value of the chickens has been estimated at $24. It’s not known how much this trial will cost taxpayers as it enters its 5th week in Sonoma County, California.

Music icon Moby is now praising Rosenberg, comparing her to historical social justice figures who faced imprisonment for their ethical beliefs. “When you look at history, the number of people who’ve been where she is, the number of people who have been arrested and persecuted for their ethical beliefs, she’s certainly in good historical company,” Moby told UnchainedTV reporter Michelle Celestino adding, “She’s in company with Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King, Jr. and on and on and on, like with the suffragettes, like so many people who’ve been arrested for doing the right thing.” Moby expressed sympathy for Rosenberg, saying, “I don’t know if there is any comfort in that, but she’s certainly on the right side of history.”

The first defense witnesses expected? Fellow Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) member Rocky Chau and animal care expert Carla Cabral.

Cabral reportedly took care of the 4 chickens Zoe rescued (named Poppy, Ivy, Aster & Azalea) and is expected to describe their condition around the time they were taken off the slaughter truck. Zoe has said they were visibly ill and suffering, adding that her repeated attempts to get law enforcement to investigate the slaughterhouse were ignored, sparking her decision to undertake the rescue. The defendant and Direct Action Everywhere claim chickens are sometimes boiled alive at the facility due to the high speed nature of the killing process. The defense team also asserted that about 4,000 chickens were crammed into the slaughter truck from which the 4 chickens were removed.

The company in question, Perdue-owned Petaluma Poultry, denies the animal cruelty allegations insisting it has high animal welfare standards and calling Rosenberg and DxE extremists with a radical agenda. The company is invited on any time.

UnchainedTV is providing daily live coverage of the trial with a team of attorneys, analysts and reporter Matthew Zirbel live at the courthouse.

1
00:00:03,140 --> 00:00:06,400
You are watching a moment in history.

2
00:00:06,600 --> 00:00:09,840
The defense case has begun in the trial

3
00:00:09,840 --> 00:00:13,960
of Zoe Rosenberg, what's being called the Chicken

4
00:00:13,960 --> 00:00:18,420
Rescue Trial, and it's going to be really

5
00:00:18,420 --> 00:00:23,720
historic as Zoe says it was worth it

6
00:00:23,720 --> 00:00:28,480
all to rescue these four innocent beings that

7
00:00:28,480 --> 00:00:32,540
she rescued from a slaughter truck way back

8
00:00:32,540 --> 00:00:34,020
in 2023.

9
00:00:34,720 --> 00:00:37,460
This is the moment that everybody's been waiting

10
00:00:37,460 --> 00:00:39,300
for since June 2023.

11
00:00:39,300 --> 00:00:43,500
You're seeing her commit the alleged crime for

12
00:00:43,500 --> 00:00:46,700
which she is charged, rescuing four chickens from

13
00:00:46,700 --> 00:00:50,740
a slaughter truck in Sonoma County, California.

14
00:00:50,740 --> 00:00:54,480
She could do five years in prison and

15
00:00:54,480 --> 00:00:56,180
we are going to hear from a very

16
00:00:56,180 --> 00:00:59,020
special guest in just a moment who will

17
00:00:59,020 --> 00:01:02,500
bring us an entirely new perspective in this

18
00:01:02,500 --> 00:01:02,860
case.

19
00:01:03,519 --> 00:01:06,620
But first, let's go straight out to the

20
00:01:06,620 --> 00:01:11,000
courthouse where our reporter Matthew Zirbel is standing

21
00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:15,220
by as supporters of Zoe Rosenberg gather to

22
00:01:15,220 --> 00:01:18,060
enter the courtroom in just a couple of

23
00:01:18,060 --> 00:01:18,320
minutes.

24
00:01:18,900 --> 00:01:22,120
So without further ado, we are going to

25
00:01:22,120 --> 00:01:24,300
go straight out to Matthew Zirbel.

26
00:01:24,740 --> 00:01:28,260
Matthew, just give us a sense of what's

27
00:01:28,260 --> 00:01:30,760
happening there, the intensity, the emotion.

28
00:01:32,120 --> 00:01:33,780
Yeah Jane, well we've got a lot of

29
00:01:33,780 --> 00:01:36,460
people gathered and this is still early.

30
00:01:36,640 --> 00:01:38,220
We're expecting I think a good number of

31
00:01:38,220 --> 00:01:42,460
people more to gather as we get a

32
00:01:42,460 --> 00:01:43,920
little bit closer to the start of court

33
00:01:43,920 --> 00:01:45,420
which is in about a half an hour

34
00:01:45,420 --> 00:01:45,800
now.

35
00:01:46,620 --> 00:01:49,540
So we're all very excited to hear Carla

36
00:01:49,540 --> 00:01:51,580
and Rocky's testimony today.

37
00:01:52,380 --> 00:01:54,720
Carla, especially being able to testify as an

38
00:01:54,720 --> 00:01:56,920
expert witness, will be able to say just

39
00:01:56,920 --> 00:02:00,060
a little bit unfortunately, but a fair bit

40
00:02:00,060 --> 00:02:03,360
of what she was experiencing, what her conclusions

41
00:02:03,360 --> 00:02:05,980
were about the chickens that she rescued.

42
00:02:06,400 --> 00:02:08,199
And so the trial is about to really

43
00:02:08,199 --> 00:02:11,380
shift from what happened to why it all

44
00:02:11,380 --> 00:02:11,740
happened.

45
00:02:12,520 --> 00:02:14,620
And there's a picture of Carla.

46
00:02:14,620 --> 00:02:17,220
She was the one who took in the

47
00:02:17,220 --> 00:02:20,360
chickens after Zoe Rosenberg rescued them.

48
00:02:20,460 --> 00:02:22,320
Can you flesh that out a little bit?

49
00:02:23,860 --> 00:02:25,600
Yeah, unfortunately I don't know the full timeline

50
00:02:25,600 --> 00:02:26,860
of events afterwards.

51
00:02:27,640 --> 00:02:30,780
So I'll be learning in court along with

52
00:02:30,780 --> 00:02:33,200
the jury, but I believe so.

53
00:02:33,280 --> 00:02:35,320
I believe she took in the chickens, did

54
00:02:35,320 --> 00:02:39,520
the initial caregiving, sent her report over to

55
00:02:39,520 --> 00:02:40,400
Dr. Rosenberg.

56
00:02:40,400 --> 00:02:42,740
Thank you so much.

57
00:02:42,820 --> 00:02:43,860
We'll be back to you in a second.

58
00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:45,580
Now our very special guest.

59
00:02:46,160 --> 00:02:49,860
This is Tracy Glover and she runs a

60
00:02:49,860 --> 00:02:54,040
Sweet Peeps Chicken Sanctuary in Alabama.

61
00:02:54,680 --> 00:02:56,400
Tracy, who are you with?

62
00:02:56,480 --> 00:02:57,780
You've been following this case.

63
00:02:58,000 --> 00:02:59,980
What are your thoughts and feelings about it?

64
00:03:00,900 --> 00:03:03,000
Hi, yeah, thanks so much for having me.

65
00:03:03,060 --> 00:03:07,520
This is Jasmine and Jasmine is the same

66
00:03:07,520 --> 00:03:10,920
kind of chicken that Zoe rescued, a Cornish

67
00:03:10,920 --> 00:03:11,380
cross.

68
00:03:12,380 --> 00:03:14,760
She also was rescued from a factory farm

69
00:03:14,760 --> 00:03:16,380
about six years ago.

70
00:03:17,760 --> 00:03:21,760
And when I watch the footage of the

71
00:03:21,760 --> 00:03:26,700
rescue, all I can think is about my

72
00:03:26,700 --> 00:03:27,100
chickens.

73
00:03:27,320 --> 00:03:31,640
So I currently have 24 right now and

74
00:03:31,640 --> 00:03:34,340
every single one of them, I mean, they're

75
00:03:34,340 --> 00:03:35,620
sentient beings.

76
00:03:36,340 --> 00:03:39,480
So, you know, to see them crammed into

77
00:03:39,480 --> 00:03:42,280
that crate, I just can't imagine that they're

78
00:03:42,280 --> 00:03:46,120
not having like wings broken or bones broken.

79
00:03:46,240 --> 00:03:47,920
I mean, they're living beings.

80
00:03:48,060 --> 00:03:49,540
They're not things.

81
00:03:50,480 --> 00:03:52,900
And it just, I can't even quite put

82
00:03:52,900 --> 00:03:54,560
into words how much it hurts my heart

83
00:03:54,560 --> 00:03:57,820
to think about somebody like Jasmine being treated

84
00:03:57,820 --> 00:03:58,440
like that.

85
00:03:59,260 --> 00:04:03,040
Jasmine and every other chicken here is an

86
00:04:03,040 --> 00:04:03,480
individual.

87
00:04:04,400 --> 00:04:07,940
They are intelligent, they are sensitive, they have

88
00:04:07,940 --> 00:04:08,500
emotions.

89
00:04:09,280 --> 00:04:13,000
They're not different in any relevant way from

90
00:04:13,000 --> 00:04:14,100
our dogs and our cats.

91
00:04:14,520 --> 00:04:17,800
I also have dogs and cats and, you

92
00:04:17,800 --> 00:04:18,820
know, they're all individuals.

93
00:04:19,540 --> 00:04:22,660
But the bond I have with the chickens

94
00:04:22,660 --> 00:04:24,480
is the same.

95
00:04:24,780 --> 00:04:27,520
And I just, you know, if we wouldn't

96
00:04:27,520 --> 00:04:29,580
do it to dogs and cats, then I

97
00:04:29,580 --> 00:04:31,260
don't, you know, we shouldn't be doing it

98
00:04:31,260 --> 00:04:31,740
to chickens.

99
00:04:32,700 --> 00:04:35,580
So many people have talked about this case

100
00:04:35,580 --> 00:04:39,960
as really highlighting a cultural divide.

101
00:04:40,240 --> 00:04:44,360
When the officer in the prosecution's case testified,

102
00:04:44,820 --> 00:04:48,460
he referred to the chickens as products and

103
00:04:48,460 --> 00:04:51,760
said, I wouldn't interact with these products because

104
00:04:51,760 --> 00:04:53,480
of contamination risk.

105
00:04:54,080 --> 00:04:56,960
What is your reaction to that?

106
00:04:58,000 --> 00:05:00,500
Essentially, I mean, let's face it, to give

107
00:05:00,500 --> 00:05:04,560
him a little leeway, everybody who buys chickens

108
00:05:04,560 --> 00:05:06,540
in the store when they're dead refers to

109
00:05:06,540 --> 00:05:07,680
them as products essentially.

110
00:05:08,220 --> 00:05:08,380
Right.

111
00:05:08,800 --> 00:05:12,160
I mean, it's just such a fiction.

112
00:05:12,700 --> 00:05:16,660
It's such a, it's so counter to reality.

113
00:05:16,660 --> 00:05:19,880
Um, you know, I mean, again, like, yeah,

114
00:05:19,920 --> 00:05:23,820
when people buy animal products in the store

115
00:05:23,820 --> 00:05:27,180
and they are already, you know, they've already

116
00:05:27,180 --> 00:05:30,460
been slaughtered and cut up and they don't

117
00:05:30,460 --> 00:05:32,660
resemble the living being that they were.

118
00:05:33,120 --> 00:05:35,580
But like, especially you're talking about these animals

119
00:05:35,580 --> 00:05:39,480
at the slaughterhouse, they're obviously not things, they're

120
00:05:39,480 --> 00:05:40,280
living beings.

121
00:05:40,280 --> 00:05:43,000
Like, I mean, I think it, though, it

122
00:05:43,000 --> 00:05:47,780
reflects so, um, accurately the way that they're

123
00:05:47,780 --> 00:05:48,100
treated.

124
00:05:48,320 --> 00:05:50,280
Like if they were things, it would be

125
00:05:50,280 --> 00:05:54,560
okay to treat them like in the industry

126
00:05:54,560 --> 00:05:55,140
does.

127
00:05:55,180 --> 00:05:57,440
But, um, it's just such a lie.

128
00:05:57,560 --> 00:05:59,460
It's, it's such a, I mean, I think

129
00:05:59,460 --> 00:06:01,740
it's, it's like the lie that we have

130
00:06:01,740 --> 00:06:03,200
to tell in order to be able to

131
00:06:03,200 --> 00:06:04,620
do to them what we do.

132
00:06:04,720 --> 00:06:07,520
But, you know, you, you just, it's just

133
00:06:07,520 --> 00:06:08,180
not reality.

134
00:06:08,680 --> 00:06:09,900
Um, it's like we can, you know, when

135
00:06:09,900 --> 00:06:13,000
you see the animals themselves and especially, I

136
00:06:13,000 --> 00:06:15,120
mean, I wish everybody had a chance to

137
00:06:15,120 --> 00:06:16,680
get to know them as individuals.

138
00:06:17,020 --> 00:06:20,460
Um, because it's, it just puts the lie

139
00:06:20,460 --> 00:06:24,620
to that whole, um, story that we've been

140
00:06:24,620 --> 00:06:26,280
told, you know, I think our whole lives

141
00:06:26,280 --> 00:06:28,620
in this society that chickens and the other

142
00:06:28,620 --> 00:06:32,060
animals that we eat are, um, fundamentally somehow

143
00:06:32,060 --> 00:06:35,300
different from other living beings like dogs and

144
00:06:35,300 --> 00:06:35,740
cats.

145
00:06:36,680 --> 00:06:39,580
Um, and, uh, I mean, I don't know,

146
00:06:39,600 --> 00:06:41,260
just to hear them talk about his products

147
00:06:41,260 --> 00:06:44,000
is it's, it's just, it's just insanity.

148
00:06:44,000 --> 00:06:46,540
It's like, it's, it's, it's, it's insane.

149
00:06:46,640 --> 00:06:49,680
It's so disconnected from the reality.

150
00:06:49,680 --> 00:06:51,540
Like this is obviously not a product.

151
00:06:51,840 --> 00:06:53,140
Jasmine is not a product.

152
00:06:53,300 --> 00:06:57,080
Jasmine is a living being, um, who feels

153
00:06:57,080 --> 00:06:59,780
pain and, and on the other side, like

154
00:06:59,780 --> 00:07:00,520
feels joy.

155
00:07:00,740 --> 00:07:02,560
Like, you know, the animals at sanctuary, the

156
00:07:02,560 --> 00:07:05,680
animals here, they're such a joyful, happy, sweet,

157
00:07:05,740 --> 00:07:06,460
little people.

158
00:07:06,680 --> 00:07:07,940
They feel safe here.

159
00:07:08,420 --> 00:07:09,560
And that's the other thing is like, just

160
00:07:09,560 --> 00:07:11,540
thinking about, you know, my, my whole goal,

161
00:07:11,600 --> 00:07:13,180
my whole mission here is to keep these

162
00:07:13,180 --> 00:07:16,260
animals safe and to make them feel safe.

163
00:07:16,760 --> 00:07:19,160
Um, and to see all those animals in

164
00:07:19,160 --> 00:07:23,660
the video, um, uh, with the you just

165
00:07:23,660 --> 00:07:27,300
know that those animals are terrified and they're

166
00:07:27,300 --> 00:07:27,800
babies.

167
00:07:28,460 --> 00:07:30,480
Um, you know, I mean, I see here

168
00:07:30,480 --> 00:07:32,360
all the time, if there's, you know, a

169
00:07:32,360 --> 00:07:35,100
Hawk or something and one of the chickens

170
00:07:35,100 --> 00:07:36,720
will spot the Hawk and, you know, you

171
00:07:36,720 --> 00:07:38,080
can see the fear on their faces and

172
00:07:38,080 --> 00:07:40,360
they run for cover or, you know, if,

173
00:07:40,360 --> 00:07:42,840
if a strange person even comes onto the

174
00:07:42,840 --> 00:07:44,700
property, they don't know if they can trust

175
00:07:44,700 --> 00:07:45,340
them or not.

176
00:07:45,440 --> 00:07:46,760
And you could just see it in their

177
00:07:46,760 --> 00:07:47,040
faces.

178
00:07:47,160 --> 00:07:48,760
They look to me like, is this person

179
00:07:48,760 --> 00:07:49,120
okay?

180
00:07:49,360 --> 00:07:50,280
Is this situation okay?

181
00:07:51,120 --> 00:07:53,220
Um, and I mean, again, these are babies

182
00:07:53,220 --> 00:07:55,780
or, you know, what, six, maybe eight weeks

183
00:07:55,780 --> 00:07:56,220
old.

184
00:07:56,240 --> 00:07:59,700
They're just these innocent, fragile, I mean, fragile

185
00:07:59,700 --> 00:08:02,020
and to cram them in there like that.

186
00:08:02,180 --> 00:08:04,400
Um, I mean, if they, again, if they

187
00:08:04,400 --> 00:08:07,520
were products, if they were inanimate objects, that

188
00:08:07,520 --> 00:08:08,920
would be fine, but they're not, they're living

189
00:08:08,920 --> 00:08:09,580
beings.

190
00:08:09,860 --> 00:08:11,920
Um, and they're trying, you know, I can't

191
00:08:11,920 --> 00:08:14,140
even imagine the trauma of that baby right

192
00:08:14,140 --> 00:08:17,960
there, the fear, um, just, just the misery

193
00:08:17,960 --> 00:08:19,840
of, of their whole existence.

194
00:08:19,900 --> 00:08:22,680
And every chicken that was shoved back there,

195
00:08:23,240 --> 00:08:24,420
they're dead, right?

196
00:08:24,780 --> 00:08:25,020
Right.

197
00:08:25,340 --> 00:08:25,460
Right.

198
00:08:25,540 --> 00:08:29,460
4,000 chickens, approximately according to the defense

199
00:08:29,460 --> 00:08:30,960
in every truck.

200
00:08:31,080 --> 00:08:33,020
And one of the reasons I just want

201
00:08:33,020 --> 00:08:35,320
to state why this is an historic trial

202
00:08:35,320 --> 00:08:37,620
is that it really goes to the heart

203
00:08:37,620 --> 00:08:42,400
of animal agriculture companies aside, chickens are the

204
00:08:42,400 --> 00:08:43,860
most killed by far.

205
00:08:44,180 --> 00:08:47,100
This is figures from 2022, more than 75

206
00:08:47,100 --> 00:08:48,660
billion chickens.

207
00:08:48,940 --> 00:08:50,540
If you were to remove chickens from the

208
00:08:50,540 --> 00:08:53,300
food chain, the number of animals kill would

209
00:08:53,300 --> 00:08:56,000
drop by 95% approximately.

210
00:08:56,800 --> 00:08:59,740
Now, let me say this, uh, Purdue is

211
00:08:59,740 --> 00:09:01,000
invited on any time.

212
00:09:01,360 --> 00:09:04,560
They say they have high animal welfare standards,

213
00:09:04,720 --> 00:09:06,100
no cages or crates.

214
00:09:06,400 --> 00:09:08,080
Well, okay.

215
00:09:08,080 --> 00:09:11,680
But obviously that's not true during transportation because

216
00:09:11,680 --> 00:09:14,960
they were transported in crates in the truck.

217
00:09:15,780 --> 00:09:19,400
Um, so we invite them on any time

218
00:09:19,400 --> 00:09:20,400
to discuss that.

219
00:09:20,580 --> 00:09:24,180
And, um, also they have an entire website

220
00:09:24,180 --> 00:09:27,520
devoted to their record on animal welfare, corporate

221
00:09:27,520 --> 00:09:31,400
.purduefarms.com forward slash responsibility forward slash animal

222
00:09:31,400 --> 00:09:31,860
care.

223
00:09:31,980 --> 00:09:34,640
They say they're a leader in animal welfare,

224
00:09:34,700 --> 00:09:37,060
dedicated to the highest standards of animal care

225
00:09:37,060 --> 00:09:39,640
and give their bird space to roam to

226
00:09:39,640 --> 00:09:40,380
the outdoors.

227
00:09:40,820 --> 00:09:44,500
And basically say DXC is an extremist group

228
00:09:44,500 --> 00:09:47,360
with the ultimate goal of ending animal agriculture.

229
00:09:47,560 --> 00:09:49,220
So before we move on and go back

230
00:09:49,220 --> 00:09:51,680
to court, what is your reaction?

231
00:09:52,220 --> 00:09:54,000
And again, we invite them on any time

232
00:09:54,000 --> 00:09:57,160
and, and that those trucks are industry standards.

233
00:09:57,160 --> 00:10:00,900
They're not unique to this company or any

234
00:10:00,900 --> 00:10:02,740
company, but right.

235
00:10:03,080 --> 00:10:05,480
Just in the transportation, what would you say?

236
00:10:06,120 --> 00:10:06,240
Yeah.

237
00:10:06,360 --> 00:10:08,200
I mean, like one thing too, that in,

238
00:10:08,340 --> 00:10:11,940
um, in that list of, you know, humane,

239
00:10:11,960 --> 00:10:15,520
uh, conditions, um, and it says the ability

240
00:10:15,520 --> 00:10:17,120
to express their natural behaviors.

241
00:10:17,120 --> 00:10:20,040
I don't even know how they could make

242
00:10:20,040 --> 00:10:20,780
that claim.

243
00:10:21,180 --> 00:10:25,060
Um, I mean, there's obviously nothing natural about

244
00:10:25,060 --> 00:10:27,420
that truck, but also, you know, I don't

245
00:10:27,420 --> 00:10:28,540
know where they're coming from.

246
00:10:28,940 --> 00:10:32,200
Um, but for sure in that moment, they're

247
00:10:32,200 --> 00:10:33,000
still alive.

248
00:10:33,940 --> 00:10:37,800
And, um, that's just, uh, uh, I mean,

249
00:10:38,060 --> 00:10:40,620
I don't know how a living being, like

250
00:10:40,620 --> 00:10:42,340
how you could think that they wouldn't be

251
00:10:42,340 --> 00:10:45,580
injured, um, treating them like that.

252
00:10:45,920 --> 00:10:47,920
Um, yeah.

253
00:10:47,940 --> 00:10:49,620
I mean, I just think it's, it's, uh,

254
00:10:49,620 --> 00:10:52,260
it's a lot of propaganda on that.

255
00:10:52,360 --> 00:10:55,120
I'm, you know, it seems to me, this

256
00:10:55,120 --> 00:10:55,840
is a crate.

257
00:10:56,460 --> 00:10:56,940
Yeah.

258
00:10:56,960 --> 00:10:57,660
That's a crate.

259
00:10:57,700 --> 00:10:59,280
And this is not natural.

260
00:10:59,380 --> 00:11:01,680
There's nothing natural about being packed in like,

261
00:11:02,020 --> 00:11:02,700
like this.

262
00:11:03,100 --> 00:11:06,540
Um, uh, it's just, um, yeah, I mean,

263
00:11:06,540 --> 00:11:09,260
it's, it's got to be, I'm sure that

264
00:11:09,260 --> 00:11:10,960
there are, if there, if there are 4

265
00:11:10,960 --> 00:11:13,380
,000 birds on that truck and Zoe rescued

266
00:11:13,380 --> 00:11:16,340
four, I mean, I bet, I can't imagine

267
00:11:16,340 --> 00:11:19,480
how many more had have injuries or other,

268
00:11:19,480 --> 00:11:22,420
um, you know, health issues besides just again,

269
00:11:22,440 --> 00:11:23,800
like the, the real, you know, these are

270
00:11:23,800 --> 00:11:25,260
emotional, sensitive beings.

271
00:11:25,560 --> 00:11:27,600
Like imagine if we did that to dogs

272
00:11:27,600 --> 00:11:30,280
or cats, just how, how, how terrified they

273
00:11:30,280 --> 00:11:30,740
would be.

274
00:11:31,980 --> 00:11:33,700
Um, so, I mean, I don't know.

275
00:11:33,740 --> 00:11:36,000
I think, uh, like you say, though, I

276
00:11:36,000 --> 00:11:39,120
mean, there's so much that is considered standard

277
00:11:39,120 --> 00:11:42,520
industry practice that is, that's legal that leads

278
00:11:42,520 --> 00:11:43,920
to tremendous suffering.

279
00:11:43,920 --> 00:11:47,300
That's tremendously cruel and we can't share it

280
00:11:47,300 --> 00:11:48,720
with who they really are.

281
00:11:48,860 --> 00:11:50,920
Um, and so we have to about who

282
00:11:50,920 --> 00:11:51,280
they are.

283
00:11:51,400 --> 00:11:53,560
I mean, like Jasmine, again, she was rescued

284
00:11:53,560 --> 00:11:56,460
from a factory farm over six years ago.

285
00:11:56,900 --> 00:11:59,640
Um, uh, you know, the typical age that

286
00:11:59,640 --> 00:12:01,200
these birds are sent to slaughter is six

287
00:12:01,200 --> 00:12:01,920
to eight weeks old.

288
00:12:02,060 --> 00:12:04,400
The birds in that crate in the video,

289
00:12:04,520 --> 00:12:06,780
they're six to eight weeks old max.

290
00:12:06,880 --> 00:12:09,600
They look older because they've been so genetically

291
00:12:09,600 --> 00:12:12,080
manipulated to grow so big that they appear

292
00:12:12,080 --> 00:12:13,820
to be almost like adults, but they're babies.

293
00:12:13,840 --> 00:12:15,080
I promised they were peeping.

294
00:12:15,200 --> 00:12:17,600
They were peeping like chicks peep.

295
00:12:18,520 --> 00:12:22,480
Um, and, um, they can have, uh, you

296
00:12:22,480 --> 00:12:24,340
know, like their lives, obviously like you said,

297
00:12:24,340 --> 00:12:26,180
the rest of them, the rest of them

298
00:12:26,180 --> 00:12:27,200
have all been sent to slaughter.

299
00:12:27,280 --> 00:12:29,660
Whereas the four that Zoe rescued right there,

300
00:12:29,720 --> 00:12:33,680
they're getting to live the lives that they

301
00:12:33,680 --> 00:12:34,740
deserve to have.

302
00:12:35,080 --> 00:12:37,360
Um, I mean, Jasmine for one, again, this

303
00:12:37,360 --> 00:12:39,200
is like one bird, every single one.

304
00:12:39,220 --> 00:12:41,840
I see how she's nuzzling under your arm.

305
00:12:41,920 --> 00:12:42,720
She would stay.

306
00:12:42,780 --> 00:12:44,520
I mean, sometimes like, again, if there's like

307
00:12:44,520 --> 00:12:46,360
a good treat or something, she might, you

308
00:12:46,360 --> 00:12:47,860
know, decide she wants to go somewhere, but

309
00:12:47,860 --> 00:12:50,200
otherwise she'll just sit in my arms.

310
00:12:50,380 --> 00:12:51,680
Like when I go out into the yard,

311
00:12:51,780 --> 00:12:53,120
they all come over to me.

312
00:12:53,260 --> 00:12:54,280
They all want attention.

313
00:12:54,480 --> 00:12:56,320
They all want to have their little like

314
00:12:56,320 --> 00:12:58,940
heads rubbed and their cheeks rubbed.

315
00:12:58,940 --> 00:13:01,680
And they're just, they like to snuggle.

316
00:13:02,180 --> 00:13:04,300
I mean, they're so, and they, you know,

317
00:13:04,320 --> 00:13:06,440
and again, they all have these individual personalities.

318
00:13:06,740 --> 00:13:08,220
They're so much smarter than people know.

319
00:13:08,800 --> 00:13:10,420
Um, you know, I did this film for

320
00:13:10,420 --> 00:13:11,600
you or with you.

321
00:13:12,100 --> 00:13:13,860
Um, and one of the chickens in that

322
00:13:13,860 --> 00:13:15,800
film, sunshine is we featured.

323
00:13:15,840 --> 00:13:17,500
And, um, she's one of the chickens who

324
00:13:17,500 --> 00:13:18,620
sleeps in the house at night.

325
00:13:18,620 --> 00:13:21,540
And like every night at bedtime, she comes,

326
00:13:21,660 --> 00:13:23,200
she goes outside during the day to be

327
00:13:23,200 --> 00:13:23,740
with her sisters.

328
00:13:23,780 --> 00:13:26,380
But every night at like dinnertime, she comes

329
00:13:26,380 --> 00:13:27,660
to the door and she waits for me,

330
00:13:27,680 --> 00:13:29,580
like on the dot, like she doesn't wear

331
00:13:29,580 --> 00:13:30,780
a watch, but she knows what time it

332
00:13:30,780 --> 00:13:30,960
is.

333
00:13:30,980 --> 00:13:32,180
And then I opened the door.

334
00:13:32,280 --> 00:13:33,640
I have to open like four doors.

335
00:13:33,780 --> 00:13:36,060
She just knows the whole way through the

336
00:13:36,060 --> 00:13:37,760
yard and then through the porch and then

337
00:13:37,760 --> 00:13:38,260
through the house.

338
00:13:38,360 --> 00:13:39,520
And she makes her way to her own

339
00:13:39,520 --> 00:13:40,120
little kennel.

340
00:13:40,640 --> 00:13:44,020
Uh, I mean, they're, they're so much smarter

341
00:13:44,020 --> 00:13:46,080
than, than people know.

342
00:13:46,440 --> 00:13:48,400
Um, and I think, you know, we have

343
00:13:48,400 --> 00:13:51,420
this like misconception that if they, if, if,

344
00:13:51,480 --> 00:13:53,600
uh, if they're, if they're stupid enough, then

345
00:13:53,600 --> 00:13:55,720
like they're suffering, then they can't suffer or

346
00:13:55,720 --> 00:13:55,940
something.

347
00:13:55,960 --> 00:13:57,400
And that just doesn't make any sense.

348
00:13:57,400 --> 00:14:00,120
Like, like babies, babies can suffer.

349
00:14:00,240 --> 00:14:01,320
I mean, we know, you know, it's like,

350
00:14:01,320 --> 00:14:02,100
it doesn't make sense.

351
00:14:02,120 --> 00:14:02,960
And it's not true.

352
00:14:02,960 --> 00:14:06,140
Like, even if they were not smart, it

353
00:14:06,140 --> 00:14:07,700
wouldn't be okay to treat them the way

354
00:14:07,700 --> 00:14:09,500
that we treat them just as in the

355
00:14:09,500 --> 00:14:11,140
same way that it's not okay to treat,

356
00:14:11,300 --> 00:14:13,200
uh, you know, somebody with like a mental

357
00:14:13,200 --> 00:14:16,140
disability or a baby or, uh, you know,

358
00:14:16,160 --> 00:14:19,220
a senior, um, you know, you had mentioned

359
00:14:19,220 --> 00:14:22,620
dogs and what's interesting is, of course, there

360
00:14:22,620 --> 00:14:25,760
is as it, there should be an uproar

361
00:14:25,760 --> 00:14:29,640
about what some other societies and not very

362
00:14:29,640 --> 00:14:32,540
many, and there's animal rights movements in all

363
00:14:32,540 --> 00:14:36,920
those societies, but look what is done to

364
00:14:36,920 --> 00:14:39,300
these dogs going to market for food and

365
00:14:39,300 --> 00:14:43,120
Americans are outraged, screaming at the top of

366
00:14:43,120 --> 00:14:44,600
their lungs as they should be.

367
00:14:44,720 --> 00:14:45,120
Right.

368
00:14:45,260 --> 00:14:47,840
But you make the point that chickens are

369
00:14:47,840 --> 00:14:48,760
not that different.

370
00:14:49,020 --> 00:14:51,000
We really want to draw the line at

371
00:14:51,000 --> 00:14:51,380
chickens.

372
00:14:51,580 --> 00:14:52,360
Final comment.

373
00:14:53,260 --> 00:14:55,860
I think I would, you know, reiterate what

374
00:14:55,860 --> 00:14:57,580
you said that, um, if you want, if

375
00:14:57,580 --> 00:15:00,040
we want to reduce the greatest amount of

376
00:15:00,040 --> 00:15:03,400
suffering as fast as possible, like just stop

377
00:15:03,400 --> 00:15:05,180
eating chickens, a lot of people, you know,

378
00:15:05,180 --> 00:15:08,060
they, as they're, as they see the, um,

379
00:15:08,280 --> 00:15:10,700
environmental implications and everything of eating meat, you

380
00:15:10,700 --> 00:15:12,620
know, they often want to, we'll start with

381
00:15:12,620 --> 00:15:14,940
the larger animals and that they end up

382
00:15:14,940 --> 00:15:16,740
eating more of the smaller animals, which means

383
00:15:16,740 --> 00:15:18,740
more animals dying and more suffering.

384
00:15:18,920 --> 00:15:20,680
Um, I think just, you know, to, to,

385
00:15:20,780 --> 00:15:25,500
to reiterate they're, they're sensitive, emotional beings with

386
00:15:25,500 --> 00:15:27,400
like rich inner lives and they don't want

387
00:15:27,400 --> 00:15:29,100
to suffer and they want to live.

388
00:15:29,280 --> 00:15:32,260
And so just, um, give up eating chickens

389
00:15:32,260 --> 00:15:34,400
and you can do so much good.

390
00:15:34,540 --> 00:15:36,180
You can reduce so much suffering in the

391
00:15:36,180 --> 00:15:36,500
world.

392
00:15:36,600 --> 00:15:38,560
And before you go, can you just, just

393
00:15:38,560 --> 00:15:41,400
bring Jasmine a little closer to the camera

394
00:15:41,400 --> 00:15:43,680
so we can see her beautiful face.

395
00:15:43,880 --> 00:15:44,300
Yeah.

396
00:15:44,360 --> 00:15:47,020
Thank you Jasmine for being our very special

397
00:15:47,020 --> 00:15:47,400
guests.

398
00:15:47,620 --> 00:15:50,560
We have an exclusive with Jasmine, the chicken

399
00:15:50,560 --> 00:15:55,240
at the Sweet Peeps Animal Sanctuary in Alabama.

400
00:15:55,560 --> 00:15:57,720
Thank you so very much.

401
00:15:58,240 --> 00:16:00,940
Appreciate you.

402
00:16:01,620 --> 00:16:02,160
Appreciate you.

403
00:16:02,280 --> 00:16:02,800
All right.

404
00:16:02,880 --> 00:16:05,640
We're going to go out now to, back

405
00:16:05,640 --> 00:16:06,500
to Matthew.

406
00:16:06,980 --> 00:16:07,600
Okay.

407
00:16:07,800 --> 00:16:09,920
We've got 15 minutes till the start of

408
00:16:09,920 --> 00:16:10,800
the defense case.

409
00:16:11,440 --> 00:16:14,540
Um, just give us a sense of the

410
00:16:14,540 --> 00:16:16,220
importance and the drama of this moment.

411
00:16:18,360 --> 00:16:18,960
Yeah.

412
00:16:19,080 --> 00:16:21,280
This is going to be the turning point

413
00:16:21,280 --> 00:16:23,700
where we get to talk about how the

414
00:16:23,700 --> 00:16:25,140
chickens were treated.

415
00:16:25,280 --> 00:16:28,300
What's like the situation that they found themselves

416
00:16:28,300 --> 00:16:31,260
in was immediately after the rescue.

417
00:16:31,640 --> 00:16:34,980
And so this is really where we get

418
00:16:34,980 --> 00:16:37,180
to talk about all the things we've been

419
00:16:37,180 --> 00:16:38,040
trying to get in.

420
00:16:38,600 --> 00:16:40,280
And it's very fortunate that we've been able

421
00:16:40,280 --> 00:16:42,640
to get in Zoe's, all of this is

422
00:16:42,640 --> 00:16:44,820
on the basis of Zoe's ability to say,

423
00:16:44,920 --> 00:16:46,960
I had a necessity defense.

424
00:16:47,300 --> 00:16:49,660
Now she's not allowed to argue in court

425
00:16:49,660 --> 00:16:52,200
that the necessity defense actually applies here.

426
00:16:52,560 --> 00:16:53,940
The judge has ruled that it does not,

427
00:16:54,060 --> 00:16:56,600
unfortunately, but she does get to argue because

428
00:16:56,600 --> 00:16:59,420
she's being charged with conspiracy that her belief

429
00:16:59,420 --> 00:17:01,880
in necessity meant that she was not planning

430
00:17:01,880 --> 00:17:03,040
to do anything illegal.

431
00:17:03,579 --> 00:17:05,839
And that was because of her good faith

432
00:17:05,839 --> 00:17:08,640
belief that it was legal to rescue chickens

433
00:17:08,640 --> 00:17:10,839
when they're being abused.

434
00:17:11,180 --> 00:17:13,680
And for good faith belief that the chickens

435
00:17:13,680 --> 00:17:15,599
at the slaughter house were being abused.

436
00:17:16,020 --> 00:17:19,619
And so that's informed by the jury, the

437
00:17:19,619 --> 00:17:22,240
actual conditions of the chickens, which Carla will

438
00:17:22,240 --> 00:17:23,700
be able to testify to.

439
00:17:24,000 --> 00:17:25,740
And that's why all of that is able

440
00:17:25,740 --> 00:17:27,180
to be discussed in court.

441
00:17:27,180 --> 00:17:30,280
And it'll be really interesting to see how

442
00:17:30,280 --> 00:17:32,260
much of it gets to get thrown to

443
00:17:32,260 --> 00:17:34,140
the jury and what the jury will make

444
00:17:34,140 --> 00:17:34,480
of it.

445
00:17:35,720 --> 00:17:36,200
Wow.

446
00:17:36,360 --> 00:17:36,760
Okay.

447
00:17:36,760 --> 00:17:38,120
This is very exciting.

448
00:17:38,240 --> 00:17:40,480
I want to bring in first our legal

449
00:17:41,600 --> 00:17:43,100
analyst, Justine Block.

450
00:17:43,380 --> 00:17:45,720
Now, one of the things that happened, of

451
00:17:45,720 --> 00:17:49,380
course, when the prosecution ends its case in

452
00:17:49,380 --> 00:17:51,960
chief, there is this opportunity before the defense

453
00:17:51,960 --> 00:17:55,200
starts for the defense to say, they didn't

454
00:17:55,200 --> 00:17:56,940
make their case, throw it all out.

455
00:17:57,340 --> 00:17:59,280
That's what the defense tried to do.

456
00:17:59,360 --> 00:18:01,680
The judge did not throw the case out,

457
00:18:01,880 --> 00:18:05,700
but he did make a ruling eliminating one

458
00:18:05,700 --> 00:18:07,140
of the aggravating factors.

459
00:18:07,280 --> 00:18:08,780
Can you tell us about that?

460
00:18:08,840 --> 00:18:10,800
Because that is a victory for the defense.

461
00:18:11,680 --> 00:18:12,600
Sure, Jane.

462
00:18:12,760 --> 00:18:15,800
What happened after the prosecution rested their case

463
00:18:15,800 --> 00:18:18,780
is that the defense asked for a directed

464
00:18:18,780 --> 00:18:23,740
verdict, basically saying that, would the judge acquit

465
00:18:23,740 --> 00:18:27,700
the defendant because the prosecution failed to present

466
00:18:27,700 --> 00:18:30,600
legally sufficient evidence to prove their case?

467
00:18:30,940 --> 00:18:33,880
So as you mentioned, the judge did not

468
00:18:33,880 --> 00:18:38,200
acquit on the three charges that the defense

469
00:18:38,200 --> 00:18:40,620
brought up and had made arguments to ask

470
00:18:40,620 --> 00:18:41,840
for those charges to be dropped.

471
00:18:41,960 --> 00:18:43,980
It's very unusual, very rare that that would

472
00:18:43,980 --> 00:18:44,340
happen.

473
00:18:45,000 --> 00:18:48,700
So those charges, there's total of four charges.

474
00:18:48,880 --> 00:18:50,600
So those are still proceeding.

475
00:18:51,220 --> 00:18:53,500
However, there was a success, as you mentioned,

476
00:18:53,600 --> 00:18:55,300
on an aggravating factor.

477
00:18:55,500 --> 00:18:59,780
There were two aggravating factors and both of

478
00:18:59,780 --> 00:19:03,040
them relate to the felony conspiracy charge.

479
00:19:03,240 --> 00:19:06,220
And those are factors that are considered in

480
00:19:06,220 --> 00:19:06,800
sentencing.

481
00:19:06,940 --> 00:19:11,740
If Zoe is found guilty and convicted on

482
00:19:11,740 --> 00:19:15,680
felony conspiracy and those aggravating factors that the

483
00:19:15,680 --> 00:19:19,260
prosecution put in their complaint are one that

484
00:19:19,260 --> 00:19:23,780
the crime indicates planning, sophistication, or professionalism, the

485
00:19:23,780 --> 00:19:25,740
judge did not dismiss that factor.

486
00:19:25,940 --> 00:19:29,600
And the second factor is inducement or leadership

487
00:19:29,600 --> 00:19:30,980
of co-conspirators.

488
00:19:31,380 --> 00:19:34,020
So the judge agreed with the defense that

489
00:19:34,020 --> 00:19:37,280
the prosecution didn't present enough evidence in their

490
00:19:37,280 --> 00:19:40,520
case to support that aggravating factor.

491
00:19:40,960 --> 00:19:45,120
However, he did leave a little room for

492
00:19:45,120 --> 00:19:48,820
the prosecution to bring it up again after

493
00:19:48,820 --> 00:19:51,420
the defense rests and for the judge to

494
00:19:51,420 --> 00:19:54,900
reconsider whether that aggravating factor would apply depending

495
00:19:54,900 --> 00:19:59,220
on the testimony presented by the witnesses.

496
00:19:59,800 --> 00:20:02,180
If Zoe testifies, it would be on her

497
00:20:02,180 --> 00:20:05,480
testimony and potential rebuttal witnesses as to that

498
00:20:05,480 --> 00:20:06,980
aggravating factor.

499
00:20:07,660 --> 00:20:09,340
A very good summary.

500
00:20:09,560 --> 00:20:11,760
So it was a victory for the defense,

501
00:20:11,980 --> 00:20:13,500
but it could come back.

502
00:20:14,420 --> 00:20:16,240
The judge could reconsider.

503
00:20:16,740 --> 00:20:19,400
And basically the aggravating factor is she's a

504
00:20:19,400 --> 00:20:22,340
leader and she inspired others to commit crimes.

505
00:20:22,800 --> 00:20:24,940
And the judge said, no, there's not enough

506
00:20:24,940 --> 00:20:26,440
evidence to show that she was in any

507
00:20:26,440 --> 00:20:27,580
kind of leadership position.

508
00:20:27,760 --> 00:20:31,720
But after she testifies, after the defense case,

509
00:20:32,120 --> 00:20:33,800
they could come back and rebuttal.

510
00:20:34,100 --> 00:20:37,160
And I get the feeling because the prosecution

511
00:20:37,160 --> 00:20:39,240
only called, correct me if I'm wrong, three

512
00:20:39,240 --> 00:20:42,540
witnesses, a cop and two employees, that they're

513
00:20:42,540 --> 00:20:46,660
planning on some big monster rebuttal case.

514
00:20:46,840 --> 00:20:48,060
We'll see if that happens.

515
00:20:48,820 --> 00:20:51,500
Certainly they're trying to think outside the box

516
00:20:51,500 --> 00:20:56,060
because other defendants in similar cases have been

517
00:20:56,060 --> 00:20:56,500
acquitted.

518
00:20:56,720 --> 00:21:00,280
Notably Alexandra Paul, the former Baywatch actress who

519
00:21:00,280 --> 00:21:01,340
also rescued a chicken.

520
00:21:01,480 --> 00:21:02,860
She was acquitted in another county.

521
00:21:03,120 --> 00:21:05,220
So they're changing the game up a little

522
00:21:05,220 --> 00:21:05,460
bit.

523
00:21:05,800 --> 00:21:08,660
So let me get to some really exciting

524
00:21:08,660 --> 00:21:09,120
news.

525
00:21:09,320 --> 00:21:12,700
Our reporter, Michelle Celestino with Unchained TV ran

526
00:21:12,700 --> 00:21:16,080
into Moby, the music icon over the weekend.

527
00:21:16,380 --> 00:21:20,180
And she asked him about this case and

528
00:21:20,180 --> 00:21:21,660
what he thought about it.

529
00:21:22,240 --> 00:21:25,040
And I've got his soundbite coming up here

530
00:21:25,040 --> 00:21:25,640
in a second.

531
00:21:26,660 --> 00:21:29,140
And where is it?

532
00:21:29,280 --> 00:21:31,020
Just so you know, we have many, many

533
00:21:31,020 --> 00:21:34,480
soundbites that we accumulate here for, here it

534
00:21:34,480 --> 00:21:34,760
is.

535
00:21:35,320 --> 00:21:36,440
Let's listen to Moby.

536
00:21:37,240 --> 00:21:40,840
And essentially Moby is calling Zoe Rosenberg a

537
00:21:40,840 --> 00:21:41,140
hero.

538
00:21:41,640 --> 00:21:42,920
This is news.

539
00:21:43,100 --> 00:21:45,000
So the fact that the Chronicle and Yahoo

540
00:21:45,000 --> 00:21:48,500
News are covering it and calling it a

541
00:21:48,500 --> 00:21:50,540
chicken rescue trial, I think that's great.

542
00:21:50,940 --> 00:21:54,300
I mean, yeah, so it's people want to

543
00:21:54,300 --> 00:21:55,520
do the right things, but I feel like

544
00:21:55,520 --> 00:21:56,640
everyone's just so overwhelmed.

545
00:21:56,880 --> 00:21:58,260
He made a movie last summer and Zoe

546
00:21:58,260 --> 00:21:59,000
was in the movie.

547
00:22:00,420 --> 00:22:03,620
What I would say to Zoe, because I've

548
00:22:03,620 --> 00:22:05,520
never been in that situation, so I can't

549
00:22:05,520 --> 00:22:07,480
be so presumptuous as to say I understand

550
00:22:07,480 --> 00:22:07,880
it.

551
00:22:08,360 --> 00:22:12,360
But when you look at history, the number

552
00:22:12,360 --> 00:22:14,480
of people who've been where she is, the

553
00:22:14,480 --> 00:22:18,360
people who've been arrested and persecuted for their

554
00:22:18,360 --> 00:22:22,520
ethical beliefs, she's certainly in good historical company.

555
00:22:23,120 --> 00:22:26,900
She's in company with Cesar Chavez and Martin

556
00:22:26,900 --> 00:22:29,120
Luther King Jr. and on and on and

557
00:22:29,120 --> 00:22:31,020
on with the suffragettes.

558
00:22:32,300 --> 00:22:35,240
So many people have been arrested for doing

559
00:22:35,240 --> 00:22:35,980
the right thing.

560
00:22:36,160 --> 00:22:37,360
So I don't know if there's any comfort

561
00:22:37,360 --> 00:22:40,660
in that, but she's certainly on the right

562
00:22:40,660 --> 00:22:41,340
side of history.

563
00:22:41,340 --> 00:22:45,680
And thank you to our reporter, Michelle Celestino,

564
00:22:45,800 --> 00:22:46,860
for getting that interview.

565
00:22:47,240 --> 00:22:51,860
Tiffany Brunelli, former law enforcement investigator turned Direct

566
00:22:51,860 --> 00:22:53,000
Action Everywhere member.

567
00:22:53,100 --> 00:22:56,080
What's your reaction to what Moby had to

568
00:22:56,080 --> 00:22:56,420
say?

569
00:22:59,290 --> 00:23:01,410
Oh, she's definitely on the right side of

570
00:23:01,410 --> 00:23:01,830
history.

571
00:23:02,090 --> 00:23:05,050
Just to put her up there with Martin

572
00:23:05,050 --> 00:23:07,310
Luther King and the others he mentioned.

573
00:23:07,710 --> 00:23:08,430
Yes, I agree.

574
00:23:08,550 --> 00:23:10,070
She's on the right side of history.

575
00:23:10,630 --> 00:23:13,930
And I just keep thinking about the quote

576
00:23:13,930 --> 00:23:18,110
or what the responding officer said that when

577
00:23:18,110 --> 00:23:22,290
he was asked by the prosecution, you know,

578
00:23:22,350 --> 00:23:24,770
did you check the condition of these animals?

579
00:23:24,910 --> 00:23:27,330
The prosecution even used the word animals.

580
00:23:27,490 --> 00:23:30,950
I still can't get around why the responding

581
00:23:31,990 --> 00:23:35,590
officer said, called the chickens products.

582
00:23:36,050 --> 00:23:38,790
I just, I can't imagine if he responded

583
00:23:38,790 --> 00:23:41,130
to a call of child abuse or even

584
00:23:41,130 --> 00:23:43,930
like a fighting dog ring, would he say

585
00:23:43,930 --> 00:23:44,650
products?

586
00:23:44,790 --> 00:23:47,490
Did the prosecution prep him on that?

587
00:23:47,590 --> 00:23:49,050
Did he come up with that himself?

588
00:23:49,190 --> 00:23:53,750
It's just so distancing from the whole scenario.

589
00:23:54,050 --> 00:23:56,050
Like why would I check the products?

590
00:23:57,590 --> 00:23:59,170
It's hard for me to get my mind

591
00:23:59,170 --> 00:24:00,590
around that.

592
00:24:01,320 --> 00:24:04,490
Well, also what stood out to me is

593
00:24:04,490 --> 00:24:10,730
that he had indicated that he didn't investigate

594
00:24:10,730 --> 00:24:14,070
the products, the animals, the sentient beings, because

595
00:24:14,070 --> 00:24:18,090
he was not aware of any issues surrounding

596
00:24:18,090 --> 00:24:21,910
them, which according to the defense he had

597
00:24:21,910 --> 00:24:24,890
in a previous hearing, like a preliminary hearing

598
00:24:24,890 --> 00:24:27,850
stated that he was aware of a controversy.

599
00:24:28,370 --> 00:24:30,570
But my point is you have to be

600
00:24:30,570 --> 00:24:31,650
living under a rock.

601
00:24:31,950 --> 00:24:34,330
It's not like this is happening in New

602
00:24:34,330 --> 00:24:36,630
York city where there's five boroughs and 8

603
00:24:36,630 --> 00:24:37,430
million people.

604
00:24:37,810 --> 00:24:42,030
This area is relatively small and everybody who

605
00:24:42,030 --> 00:24:45,930
lives there knows about direct action everywhere and

606
00:24:45,930 --> 00:24:51,430
the gazillion protests and open rescues and all

607
00:24:51,430 --> 00:24:53,270
sorts of events that have been happening in

608
00:24:53,270 --> 00:24:56,610
Northern California for years now.

609
00:24:56,810 --> 00:25:00,850
I'll just point to one here, a massive

610
00:25:00,850 --> 00:25:03,750
open rescue where the police showed up in

611
00:25:03,750 --> 00:25:08,430
force again in Northern California in this general

612
00:25:08,430 --> 00:25:09,030
region.

613
00:25:09,210 --> 00:25:14,510
How could you not know about the claims

614
00:25:14,510 --> 00:25:18,230
of direct action everywhere that they have tried

615
00:25:18,230 --> 00:25:21,970
to submit to law enforcement for decades, not

616
00:25:21,970 --> 00:25:25,150
decades, excuse me, for many years, let's say

617
00:25:25,150 --> 00:25:31,070
a half a decade, saying essentially that there

618
00:25:31,070 --> 00:25:35,610
is ongoing animal cruelty at all these factory

619
00:25:35,610 --> 00:25:36,110
farms.

620
00:25:36,430 --> 00:25:41,550
Essentially, and correct me if I'm wrong, but

621
00:25:41,550 --> 00:25:44,030
what direct action everywhere is saying is the

622
00:25:44,030 --> 00:25:47,370
institution of factory farming itself is inherently cruel.

623
00:25:47,790 --> 00:25:53,050
Industrialized animal agriculture that kills 140,000 chickens

624
00:25:53,050 --> 00:25:57,530
every minute on this planet is inherently cruel.

625
00:25:57,690 --> 00:25:59,970
The systems are inherently cruel.

626
00:26:01,450 --> 00:26:04,050
I find it very hard to believe that

627
00:26:04,050 --> 00:26:08,410
any law enforcement officer could be living in

628
00:26:08,410 --> 00:26:11,530
that part of California and not be aware

629
00:26:11,530 --> 00:26:13,870
that there is a controversy over the treatment

630
00:26:13,870 --> 00:26:19,430
of animals in these industrialized facilities, whether it

631
00:26:19,430 --> 00:26:22,010
be the factory farm or the slaughterhouse.

632
00:26:22,810 --> 00:26:24,190
I'm going to go back to you, Tiffany,

633
00:26:24,330 --> 00:26:26,550
because you are a member of direct action

634
00:26:26,550 --> 00:26:29,030
everywhere and you're a former law enforcement investigator.

635
00:26:29,950 --> 00:26:31,710
Yes, Jane, I think that was all a

636
00:26:31,710 --> 00:26:32,890
great point.

637
00:26:33,050 --> 00:26:35,210
I remember I was up there for Wayne's

638
00:26:35,210 --> 00:26:40,710
sentencing hearing and rally when Zoe and Rocky

639
00:26:40,710 --> 00:26:41,970
and others were arrested.

640
00:26:42,570 --> 00:26:46,750
They must have had at least 10 officers

641
00:26:46,750 --> 00:26:50,450
just swarm us just to do those simple

642
00:26:50,450 --> 00:26:51,990
arrests during a rally.

643
00:26:52,870 --> 00:26:54,990
I don't know if they were planning on,

644
00:26:55,090 --> 00:26:57,550
we were going to get violent, but they

645
00:26:57,550 --> 00:26:58,950
know it's not a violent group.

646
00:26:59,370 --> 00:27:02,790
How big can this police department be, Petaluma

647
00:27:02,790 --> 00:27:03,730
Police Department?

648
00:27:04,070 --> 00:27:08,770
These are sheriffs here that we're looking at.

649
00:27:09,170 --> 00:27:12,630
By the way, the young man with the

650
00:27:12,630 --> 00:27:18,410
rose and the light green jacket, that is

651
00:27:18,410 --> 00:27:19,090
Rocky Chow.

652
00:27:19,210 --> 00:27:20,570
He's going to be one of the first

653
00:27:20,570 --> 00:27:21,250
witnesses.

654
00:27:22,170 --> 00:27:24,970
Then the other first witness is going to

655
00:27:24,970 --> 00:27:28,790
be Carla Cabral, who is a well-known

656
00:27:28,790 --> 00:27:31,050
animal activist in her own right.

657
00:27:31,290 --> 00:27:34,090
Yes, she has been arrested in a recent

658
00:27:34,090 --> 00:27:35,050
goat rescue.

659
00:27:35,610 --> 00:27:38,870
She is on the witness stand probably two

660
00:27:38,870 --> 00:27:42,430
minutes away from taking the stand right now

661
00:27:42,430 --> 00:27:45,790
as the first witness in the defense, the

662
00:27:45,790 --> 00:27:48,790
one who received the four chickens, we are

663
00:27:48,790 --> 00:27:49,150
told.

664
00:27:49,570 --> 00:27:51,310
Obviously, I can't predict what's going to be

665
00:27:51,310 --> 00:27:53,250
said on the stand, but this is what's

666
00:27:53,250 --> 00:27:53,970
been reported.

667
00:27:54,470 --> 00:27:56,250
These are the four chickens who are living

668
00:27:56,250 --> 00:27:59,270
their best life now after having been rescued.

669
00:27:59,750 --> 00:28:01,830
This is the healthy version of them.

670
00:28:02,310 --> 00:28:05,030
Of course, the version that they're going to

671
00:28:05,030 --> 00:28:07,290
be talking about is the version of what

672
00:28:07,290 --> 00:28:10,530
happened to them minutes after this rescue.

673
00:28:11,170 --> 00:28:13,810
Carla Cabral is going to testify.

674
00:28:14,750 --> 00:28:17,430
The allegations are that they had scratches, they

675
00:28:17,430 --> 00:28:20,790
had bruises, they were traumatized, and they also

676
00:28:20,790 --> 00:28:22,310
had bacteria.

677
00:28:22,630 --> 00:28:28,550
We could hear from Carla Cabral as a

678
00:28:28,550 --> 00:28:29,330
defense witness.

679
00:28:29,610 --> 00:28:36,130
Additionally, another witness is going to be Zoe

680
00:28:36,130 --> 00:28:37,650
Rosenberg's own mother.

681
00:28:38,510 --> 00:28:41,910
Zoe Rosenberg's own mother, the defendant's mother, is

682
00:28:41,910 --> 00:28:43,150
a veterinarian.

683
00:28:43,990 --> 00:28:46,750
She also is going to testify.

684
00:28:47,430 --> 00:28:53,310
As we bring this together, this all could

685
00:28:53,310 --> 00:28:56,070
happen before Zoe takes the stand.

686
00:28:56,710 --> 00:29:00,790
Just to recap and review, we're going to

687
00:29:00,790 --> 00:29:04,150
have Carla Cabral, we're going to have Rocky,

688
00:29:04,750 --> 00:29:08,550
we're going to have Dr. Rosenberg, Zoe's mother,

689
00:29:08,910 --> 00:29:12,730
and we may also have this woman.

690
00:29:13,950 --> 00:29:18,270
Let me get to her image, Raven Deerbrook.

691
00:29:18,350 --> 00:29:21,990
She is a famed undercover investigator who is

692
00:29:21,990 --> 00:29:25,350
most notable for having gone into a pig

693
00:29:25,350 --> 00:29:28,610
slaughterhouse and been one of the only people

694
00:29:28,610 --> 00:29:31,730
on the planet to videotape the pig gas

695
00:29:31,730 --> 00:29:35,930
chambers, uncovering to the world that these pigs

696
00:29:35,930 --> 00:29:38,030
scream and writhe to death as they are

697
00:29:38,030 --> 00:29:39,270
slowly suffocated.

698
00:29:39,790 --> 00:29:42,710
Very different from the, oh, they just fall

699
00:29:42,710 --> 00:29:46,410
asleep peacefully storyline that the public has been

700
00:29:46,410 --> 00:29:46,710
given.

701
00:29:47,350 --> 00:29:52,410
These are hardcore, although nonviolent in the extreme,

702
00:29:52,670 --> 00:29:56,390
extreme in their nonviolence, animal cruelty investigators.

703
00:29:56,550 --> 00:29:59,110
This woman literally risked her life.

704
00:29:59,210 --> 00:30:00,790
I interviewed her after that and she said

705
00:30:00,790 --> 00:30:03,610
she was just literally moments away.

706
00:30:03,930 --> 00:30:05,970
If she had not grabbed on one thing

707
00:30:05,970 --> 00:30:07,650
and pulled herself out, would have died in

708
00:30:07,650 --> 00:30:08,330
the gas chamber.

709
00:30:08,750 --> 00:30:12,150
It's fair to say that whatever you have

710
00:30:12,150 --> 00:30:14,790
to say about these folks, however you feel

711
00:30:14,790 --> 00:30:16,430
about them, they are courageous.

712
00:30:17,290 --> 00:30:22,630
Zoe Rosenberg is actually, in her own words,

713
00:30:22,810 --> 00:30:25,410
potentially risking her life as she has a

714
00:30:25,410 --> 00:30:30,770
lifelong from birth type one diabetes and a

715
00:30:30,770 --> 00:30:33,570
health problem that she was born with that

716
00:30:33,570 --> 00:30:37,090
requires her to have medication and all sorts

717
00:30:37,090 --> 00:30:39,810
of equipment that she was told, or she

718
00:30:39,810 --> 00:30:41,830
said that law enforcement told her that they

719
00:30:41,830 --> 00:30:43,690
can't always provide behind bars.

720
00:30:44,730 --> 00:30:49,030
Let's listen to something else that Zoe had

721
00:30:49,030 --> 00:30:52,970
to say about the prosecution's case.

722
00:30:53,010 --> 00:30:55,910
Remember it was one law enforcement officer and

723
00:30:55,910 --> 00:30:59,910
two people who work for the company.

724
00:31:00,530 --> 00:31:01,670
And one was a woman.

725
00:31:02,190 --> 00:31:03,210
Let's listen to this.

726
00:31:03,630 --> 00:31:06,490
She testified that I caused about $28,000

727
00:31:06,490 --> 00:31:09,830
in losses on June 13th and about $75

728
00:31:09,830 --> 00:31:13,750
,000 in losses on the following Saturday in

729
00:31:13,750 --> 00:31:16,850
overtime that they had to pay employees during

730
00:31:16,850 --> 00:31:17,770
cross-examination.

731
00:31:17,990 --> 00:31:19,550
She was asked about footage that was taken

732
00:31:19,550 --> 00:31:22,110
on the of birds flailing who clearly were

733
00:31:22,110 --> 00:31:23,050
not stunned properly.

734
00:31:23,310 --> 00:31:24,890
And she was a bit dodgy with those

735
00:31:24,890 --> 00:31:25,490
questions.

736
00:31:25,810 --> 00:31:29,210
She also admitted that birds sometimes eat condemned

737
00:31:29,210 --> 00:31:31,310
chickens out of the dumpster, which is very

738
00:31:31,310 --> 00:31:34,230
concerning because wild birds can be getting sick

739
00:31:34,230 --> 00:31:35,550
from those chickens.

740
00:31:35,830 --> 00:31:37,030
In fact, a lot of the birds who

741
00:31:37,030 --> 00:31:39,010
are thrown in the dumpster are thrown in

742
00:31:39,010 --> 00:31:41,630
the dumpster because they are infected with concerning

743
00:31:41,630 --> 00:31:42,150
bacteria.

744
00:31:42,890 --> 00:31:45,910
So a couple of things, I'm going to

745
00:31:45,910 --> 00:31:47,650
go back to Tracy in a second to

746
00:31:47,650 --> 00:31:49,510
talk to her about this idea of the

747
00:31:49,510 --> 00:31:52,910
other birds, wildlife eating the condemned birds.

748
00:31:53,550 --> 00:31:57,210
But when it comes to money, Justine Block,

749
00:31:57,290 --> 00:31:58,110
you're our attorney.

750
00:31:59,450 --> 00:32:03,890
So they're saying it cost, I think she

751
00:32:03,890 --> 00:32:07,410
said $28,000 the night of, and then

752
00:32:07,410 --> 00:32:10,650
more from lost overtime for a total of

753
00:32:10,650 --> 00:32:12,030
almost $100,000.

754
00:32:12,690 --> 00:32:15,070
What are your thoughts on that?

755
00:32:15,230 --> 00:32:19,390
I mean, how important is the money?

756
00:32:19,490 --> 00:32:20,990
I always say, follow the money.

757
00:32:23,520 --> 00:32:26,680
What's going on there with that witness's testimony

758
00:32:26,680 --> 00:32:30,340
for the prosecution is I'm gathering that the

759
00:32:30,340 --> 00:32:34,620
prosecution's trying to prove their elements of the

760
00:32:34,620 --> 00:32:38,980
crime of trespass Remember, there's two counts of

761
00:32:38,980 --> 00:32:39,520
trespass.

762
00:32:39,600 --> 00:32:42,180
And one of the trespass counts has to

763
00:32:42,180 --> 00:32:47,020
do with committing the trespass by entering lands

764
00:32:47,020 --> 00:32:49,940
for the purpose of injuring property or property

765
00:32:49,940 --> 00:32:54,020
rights with the intention of interfering or obstructing

766
00:32:54,020 --> 00:32:56,400
or injuring the lawful business.

767
00:32:56,980 --> 00:32:59,720
And that's just part, I'm quoting part of

768
00:32:59,720 --> 00:33:03,420
the charge, because that's what the prosecution's trying

769
00:33:03,420 --> 00:33:10,000
to show is this action by Zoe on

770
00:33:10,000 --> 00:33:13,580
the property of removing the chickens interfered with

771
00:33:13,580 --> 00:33:14,300
their business.

772
00:33:14,840 --> 00:33:17,700
And so they are saying they suffered damages,

773
00:33:17,980 --> 00:33:18,880
financial damages.

774
00:33:19,420 --> 00:33:23,400
But from what I gathered on the expos

775
00:33:23,400 --> 00:33:25,300
about the back and forth, it's hard to

776
00:33:25,300 --> 00:33:28,680
say without hearing it myself, but it seems

777
00:33:28,680 --> 00:33:31,340
very weak in terms of the intent.

778
00:33:31,520 --> 00:33:33,740
So I'm looking forward to hearing what the

779
00:33:33,740 --> 00:33:38,040
defense witnesses say about about this about the

780
00:33:38,040 --> 00:33:41,120
situation and more about Zoe's intent because it

781
00:33:41,120 --> 00:33:44,460
she specifically what she wasn't going there to

782
00:33:44,460 --> 00:33:46,240
interfere with their business, she was going to

783
00:33:46,240 --> 00:33:50,820
rescue the chickens and keep them from from

784
00:33:50,820 --> 00:33:52,440
being they were sick.

785
00:33:52,720 --> 00:33:54,700
So she you can see in the video

786
00:33:54,700 --> 00:33:57,280
where she's pulling out the chickens, she's sorting

787
00:33:57,280 --> 00:34:00,620
through to identify which ones are sick.

788
00:34:00,920 --> 00:34:04,760
And the defense's position, as I understand, has

789
00:34:04,760 --> 00:34:07,960
been to say, well, these chickens probably wouldn't

790
00:34:07,960 --> 00:34:12,040
have been slaughtered for food consumption.

791
00:34:12,080 --> 00:34:15,639
Anyway, if they're sick chickens, they are removed

792
00:34:15,639 --> 00:34:17,320
from the line, they may not even be

793
00:34:17,320 --> 00:34:17,900
stunned.

794
00:34:18,880 --> 00:34:20,679
And and they're suffering.

795
00:34:20,679 --> 00:34:23,100
If they're not stunned, they're hanging upside down

796
00:34:23,100 --> 00:34:25,800
and not and just stunned and flailing their

797
00:34:25,800 --> 00:34:28,020
arms or their wings are flailing.

798
00:34:28,940 --> 00:34:32,159
And so the argument and position, as I

799
00:34:32,159 --> 00:34:34,280
understand, is what the defense is trying to

800
00:34:34,280 --> 00:34:36,760
say is that these animals may not even

801
00:34:36,760 --> 00:34:38,440
been sold for food.

802
00:34:38,460 --> 00:34:40,179
So how is that even interfering with their

803
00:34:40,179 --> 00:34:42,860
business if they're just discarding these animals, the

804
00:34:42,860 --> 00:34:46,460
sick birds into piles, they're not entering the

805
00:34:46,460 --> 00:34:48,840
food chain is one and then this particular

806
00:34:48,840 --> 00:34:51,800
witness that testified about the financial damages, she

807
00:34:51,800 --> 00:34:55,900
couldn't say that that particular truck that Zoe's

808
00:34:55,900 --> 00:34:59,360
at with the 4000 chickens didn't go through

809
00:34:59,360 --> 00:35:02,220
the slaughterhouse that day.

810
00:35:02,360 --> 00:35:04,220
So then they may not have this particular

811
00:35:04,220 --> 00:35:06,300
truck may not have caused them and what

812
00:35:06,300 --> 00:35:09,080
Zoe's did in that video may not have

813
00:35:09,080 --> 00:35:11,240
directly caused them any financial losses.

814
00:35:11,240 --> 00:35:13,720
So they couldn't really tie that truck.

815
00:35:13,840 --> 00:35:15,920
So the witness that they had didn't really

816
00:35:15,920 --> 00:35:18,480
seem to deliver what the prosecution was wanting.

817
00:35:19,140 --> 00:35:21,120
So I thought the defense was able to

818
00:35:21,120 --> 00:35:22,940
poke a lot of holes in it.

819
00:35:23,360 --> 00:35:25,460
And to leave enough for a reasonable doubt.

820
00:35:25,680 --> 00:35:27,680
All the defense has to show is reasonable

821
00:35:27,680 --> 00:35:28,380
doubt.

822
00:35:29,200 --> 00:35:31,140
And and so I thought that was good

823
00:35:31,140 --> 00:35:31,920
for the defense.

824
00:35:31,940 --> 00:35:34,760
And we'll see more about how they present

825
00:35:34,760 --> 00:35:35,380
this today.

826
00:35:35,660 --> 00:35:38,000
You raise a really important point.

827
00:35:38,160 --> 00:35:40,120
All it takes is one juror and I

828
00:35:40,120 --> 00:35:42,360
want to go back to Tracy Glover who

829
00:35:42,360 --> 00:35:47,020
runs the Sweet Peeps Animal Sanctuary in Alabama.

830
00:35:47,580 --> 00:35:48,840
Are you still there?

831
00:35:48,960 --> 00:35:50,940
Is that Jasmine or is that somebody else?

832
00:35:51,080 --> 00:35:53,400
I had somebody else for a minute Satya

833
00:35:53,400 --> 00:35:57,500
but Satya was more interested in seeing what

834
00:35:57,500 --> 00:35:59,900
kind of treats she could find but Jasmine

835
00:35:59,900 --> 00:36:01,980
so Jasmine popped back up in my lap.

836
00:36:02,340 --> 00:36:04,540
I didn't want to keep playing the chickens

837
00:36:04,540 --> 00:36:08,000
upside down over and over but I mean

838
00:36:08,000 --> 00:36:11,000
as you see again I think in a

839
00:36:11,000 --> 00:36:13,320
way this is a defense of the company

840
00:36:13,320 --> 00:36:14,020
itself.

841
00:36:14,760 --> 00:36:16,640
These are standard procedures.

842
00:36:17,500 --> 00:36:24,240
Industrialized animal agriculture is killing 75 excuse me

843
00:36:24,240 --> 00:36:27,680
now it's really 80 or even 82 or

844
00:36:27,680 --> 00:36:31,520
90 however you count it land animals alone

845
00:36:31,520 --> 00:36:33,740
billion billion every year.

846
00:36:34,480 --> 00:36:38,340
Is there any way to this is what

847
00:36:38,340 --> 00:36:40,800
DXC says there's no nice way to kill

848
00:36:40,800 --> 00:36:42,620
an animal who doesn't want to die.

849
00:36:43,100 --> 00:36:46,140
Is there any nice way to kill 80

850
00:36:46,140 --> 00:36:50,820
or 90 billion animals every year or which

851
00:36:50,820 --> 00:36:54,440
amounts to approximately 140,000 chickens a minute

852
00:36:54,440 --> 00:36:57,340
on this planet all the companies included.

853
00:36:57,980 --> 00:37:00,100
This is I think the essence of the

854
00:37:00,100 --> 00:37:00,480
case.

855
00:37:01,220 --> 00:37:06,120
All systems that we're seeing here are not

856
00:37:06,120 --> 00:37:07,780
unique to any one company.

857
00:37:09,140 --> 00:37:12,460
Right I mean I think that's what makes

858
00:37:12,460 --> 00:37:15,340
the case so hard I think all around

859
00:37:15,340 --> 00:37:19,580
is that the company is trying to defend

860
00:37:19,580 --> 00:37:24,660
these standard practices that are inherently causing tremendous

861
00:37:24,660 --> 00:37:29,040
suffering like even if everything goes right they're

862
00:37:29,040 --> 00:37:33,120
causing you know not just the death of

863
00:37:33,120 --> 00:37:36,400
these animals who want to live like all

864
00:37:36,400 --> 00:37:41,280
of us do but there's just inherent suffering

865
00:37:41,280 --> 00:37:43,660
in the process and then you have these

866
00:37:43,660 --> 00:37:46,900
other instances like things like you know chickens

867
00:37:46,900 --> 00:37:49,800
being boiled alive or not being properly stunned

868
00:37:49,800 --> 00:37:52,260
before they're slaughtered and even though that's like

869
00:37:52,260 --> 00:37:54,840
not supposed to happen it's to your point

870
00:37:54,840 --> 00:37:58,200
about when you're killing this many animals and

871
00:37:58,200 --> 00:37:59,680
like you know and it's all about the

872
00:37:59,680 --> 00:38:01,700
bottom line right so the faster you can

873
00:38:01,700 --> 00:38:05,240
kill the more animals the more profit and

874
00:38:05,240 --> 00:38:08,020
that's what it's all about and the and

875
00:38:08,020 --> 00:38:09,960
the faster you you do and you know

876
00:38:09,960 --> 00:38:13,160
the more animals you kill the more animals

877
00:38:13,160 --> 00:38:17,340
will fall through whatever minimal care standards are

878
00:38:17,340 --> 00:38:19,720
set up and even those minimal care standards

879
00:38:19,720 --> 00:38:23,940
ensure suffering but it's also a guarantee when

880
00:38:23,940 --> 00:38:26,980
the lines are running that fast that animals

881
00:38:26,980 --> 00:38:29,980
will not even get the the bare minimum

882
00:38:29,980 --> 00:38:33,940
protections and so things like being boiled alive

883
00:38:33,940 --> 00:38:36,800
will are happening even if it's a fraction

884
00:38:36,800 --> 00:38:40,720
of that total number it's millions it's probably

885
00:38:40,720 --> 00:38:43,660
hundreds of millions of animals who are suffering

886
00:38:43,660 --> 00:38:45,920
like they're not just being killed they are

887
00:38:45,920 --> 00:38:48,400
being tortured before they're killed and they are

888
00:38:48,400 --> 00:38:52,500
not products they're not widgets they're sweet individual

889
00:38:52,500 --> 00:38:56,080
beings like jasmine like even right now like

890
00:38:56,080 --> 00:38:57,880
little jasmine was like she kind of wants

891
00:38:57,880 --> 00:38:59,360
to get she was thinking about getting up

892
00:38:59,360 --> 00:39:00,940
my off my lap and i'm gonna let

893
00:39:00,940 --> 00:39:02,480
her if she wants to because i don't

894
00:39:02,480 --> 00:39:05,100
want her to for a moment to suffer

895
00:39:05,100 --> 00:39:09,140
um you know just just uh she's an

896
00:39:09,140 --> 00:39:11,460
individual being and her individual needs need to

897
00:39:11,460 --> 00:39:14,180
be considered um that's just like the foundation

898
00:39:14,180 --> 00:39:17,460
of a compassionate society of like a base

899
00:39:17,460 --> 00:39:20,860
a society that that reveres kindness at all

900
00:39:20,860 --> 00:39:25,760
and the industry is the antithesis of a

901
00:39:25,760 --> 00:39:28,100
good society of a society where we care

902
00:39:28,100 --> 00:39:32,080
for the vulnerable and the innocent where kindness

903
00:39:32,080 --> 00:39:35,300
and compassion are revered and that's the you

904
00:39:35,300 --> 00:39:39,920
know what's so um just just twisted about

905
00:39:39,920 --> 00:39:42,300
this case is like here's this brave young

906
00:39:42,300 --> 00:39:47,120
girl who is moved to this to take

907
00:39:47,120 --> 00:39:49,280
that you know to risk her own liberty

908
00:39:49,280 --> 00:39:54,180
and safety to um protect these innocent beings

909
00:39:54,180 --> 00:39:58,100
she's moved by kindness and compassion and we

910
00:39:58,100 --> 00:40:02,060
are contemplating jailing her and i have to

911
00:40:02,060 --> 00:40:05,320
believe that most people would be on her

912
00:40:05,320 --> 00:40:07,260
side but then it's like you look at

913
00:40:07,260 --> 00:40:09,460
like you know what are the repercussions of

914
00:40:09,460 --> 00:40:11,020
acquitting her and like what does that say

915
00:40:11,020 --> 00:40:13,360
about the industry and you you can't escape

916
00:40:13,360 --> 00:40:17,860
the the larger questions about whether or not

917
00:40:17,860 --> 00:40:20,140
this industry should exist and i think you

918
00:40:20,140 --> 00:40:22,440
know if we believe in kindness if we

919
00:40:22,440 --> 00:40:25,620
believe in compassion and if we think suffering

920
00:40:25,620 --> 00:40:30,060
is wrong then this industry should not exist

921
00:40:30,060 --> 00:40:33,800
i mean first of all i want to

922
00:40:33,800 --> 00:40:35,760
say that you're talking about the industry in

923
00:40:35,760 --> 00:40:37,800
general the figures that we're talking about are

924
00:40:37,800 --> 00:40:41,400
the industry in general 140 000 chickens killed

925
00:40:41,400 --> 00:40:45,280
every minute globally there's 8.2 billion humans

926
00:40:45,280 --> 00:40:49,060
at least on this planet and um unfortunately

927
00:40:49,060 --> 00:40:52,440
meat consumption continues to rise and that's why

928
00:40:52,440 --> 00:40:55,480
this trial is such an important trial historically

929
00:40:55,480 --> 00:40:58,760
because chickens are again the number one animal

930
00:40:58,760 --> 00:41:03,040
killed and uh you know the last question

931
00:41:03,040 --> 00:41:04,820
i have to ask you is why is

932
00:41:04,820 --> 00:41:07,960
it that and do you see people change

933
00:41:07,960 --> 00:41:10,280
their attitude toward chickens when they come to

934
00:41:10,280 --> 00:41:14,200
your sanctuary because it seems that particularly chickens

935
00:41:14,200 --> 00:41:15,620
i mean i've had people say to me

936
00:41:15,620 --> 00:41:17,520
i don't eat meat i just eat chicken

937
00:41:17,520 --> 00:41:21,220
uh they they just have a special quality

938
00:41:21,220 --> 00:41:24,940
there's there's a wall yeah people who've woken

939
00:41:24,940 --> 00:41:28,220
up about pigs and cows just aren't waking

940
00:41:28,220 --> 00:41:31,420
up about chickens yeah yeah i don't know

941
00:41:31,420 --> 00:41:33,100
what that is but i have to admit

942
00:41:33,100 --> 00:41:35,460
that i mean i think before i started

943
00:41:35,460 --> 00:41:38,960
caring for chickens i was vegan um i

944
00:41:38,960 --> 00:41:40,660
had been for like 15 years before i

945
00:41:40,660 --> 00:41:42,960
took in my first rescues but i still

946
00:41:42,960 --> 00:41:45,620
think that i felt more of a connection

947
00:41:45,620 --> 00:41:48,340
with the larger mammals you know i don't

948
00:41:48,340 --> 00:41:50,080
know if it's like that they have these

949
00:41:50,080 --> 00:41:52,480
big eyes or if there's some like can

950
00:41:52,480 --> 00:41:55,920
you know some more instinctive connection because they're

951
00:41:55,920 --> 00:41:59,680
mammals and chickens are are birds i don't

952
00:41:59,680 --> 00:42:01,300
know what that is but you know i

953
00:42:01,300 --> 00:42:03,020
also think sometimes too it's that thing of

954
00:42:03,020 --> 00:42:04,900
especially like you know the the chickens that

955
00:42:04,900 --> 00:42:08,180
we raise for meat um cornish crosses they're

956
00:42:08,180 --> 00:42:09,700
all these big white birds the ones we

957
00:42:09,700 --> 00:42:11,740
lay we we raise for eggs are mostly

958
00:42:11,740 --> 00:42:14,860
these small white birds but they all just

959
00:42:14,860 --> 00:42:17,460
look indistinct it's hard especially to you know

960
00:42:17,460 --> 00:42:19,560
you hear the numbers and it just they

961
00:42:19,560 --> 00:42:23,260
just become like an undifferentiated mass when people

962
00:42:23,260 --> 00:42:26,800
come here and i put jasmine or fanny

963
00:42:26,800 --> 00:42:29,720
or jojo eloise into somebody's arms and they

964
00:42:29,720 --> 00:42:33,000
meet them people are stunned like people i

965
00:42:33,000 --> 00:42:34,740
don't have a lot of visitors here because

966
00:42:34,740 --> 00:42:36,660
it's a small sanctuary it's my home and

967
00:42:36,660 --> 00:42:38,100
more than anything i want to make sure

968
00:42:38,100 --> 00:42:40,360
that the animals here are safe and feel

969
00:42:40,360 --> 00:42:42,860
comfortable and aren't stressed out but whenever anybody

970
00:42:42,860 --> 00:42:44,940
does come and they get to hold one

971
00:42:44,940 --> 00:42:47,060
of these chickens especially and again because they're

972
00:42:47,060 --> 00:42:48,520
all individuals right some don't want to be

973
00:42:48,520 --> 00:42:51,040
held so i i basically you know i

974
00:42:51,040 --> 00:42:52,440
asked like do you want to be held

975
00:42:52,440 --> 00:42:55,040
and there are some like jasmine who who

976
00:42:55,040 --> 00:42:56,960
loves to be held by she had made

977
00:42:56,960 --> 00:42:58,140
anybody you know she just wants to be

978
00:42:58,140 --> 00:43:00,640
snuggled all the time and people come and

979
00:43:00,640 --> 00:43:02,080
they meet them and they go like oh

980
00:43:02,080 --> 00:43:03,560
my god i had no idea is this

981
00:43:03,560 --> 00:43:05,120
what chickens are like i'll never eat another

982
00:43:05,120 --> 00:43:08,500
chicken again and they don't um and um

983
00:43:08,500 --> 00:43:10,240
so i think it has has a lot

984
00:43:10,240 --> 00:43:11,660
to do with like we don't know who

985
00:43:11,660 --> 00:43:13,320
they are even to you know i mean

986
00:43:13,320 --> 00:43:15,120
it's not very common anymore that people like

987
00:43:15,120 --> 00:43:16,820
grow up on farms but even the people

988
00:43:16,820 --> 00:43:18,940
i know who've grown up on farms have

989
00:43:18,940 --> 00:43:21,100
had the you know they've had chickens as

990
00:43:21,100 --> 00:43:23,540
a product to be exploited and so they

991
00:43:23,540 --> 00:43:26,020
haven't treated them they haven't you know it

992
00:43:26,020 --> 00:43:27,960
hasn't been like the norm to treat them

993
00:43:27,960 --> 00:43:31,160
with the gentleness and kindness that you need

994
00:43:31,160 --> 00:43:32,880
to treat them with for them to earn

995
00:43:32,880 --> 00:43:35,800
your trust or to earn their trust and

996
00:43:35,800 --> 00:43:37,400
so i you know i think people will

997
00:43:37,400 --> 00:43:38,880
come and they'll say like oh every farm

998
00:43:38,880 --> 00:43:40,260
i've ever been at the chickens run away

999
00:43:40,260 --> 00:43:41,640
from you they don't run from you like

1000
00:43:41,640 --> 00:43:43,340
no of course they don't run from me

1001
00:43:43,340 --> 00:43:44,960
they run to me because they know i'm

1002
00:43:44,960 --> 00:43:46,780
safe so i just i don't know i

1003
00:43:46,780 --> 00:43:50,020
think people don't know them um and they're

1004
00:43:50,020 --> 00:43:53,800
presented as this amorphous mass they don't you

1005
00:43:53,800 --> 00:43:56,600
know they don't see them as individuals um

1006
00:43:56,600 --> 00:44:00,320
but they are that's what you're providing for

1007
00:44:00,320 --> 00:44:03,120
us is an opportunity to see them as

1008
00:44:03,120 --> 00:44:05,940
individuals it was great to meet jasmine so

1009
00:44:05,940 --> 00:44:07,140
great to talk to you i hope you

1010
00:44:07,140 --> 00:44:09,500
come back as this trial progresses apparently it's

1011
00:44:09,500 --> 00:44:10,580
going to go through the end of the

1012
00:44:10,580 --> 00:44:15,240
month uh final thoughts from our attorney jazz

1013
00:44:15,240 --> 00:44:18,600
justine block and then we'll go over to

1014
00:44:18,600 --> 00:44:22,600
tiffany i just want to address about the

1015
00:44:22,600 --> 00:44:27,440
the terminology as far as referring to the

1016
00:44:27,440 --> 00:44:30,380
birds as products remember the um about the

1017
00:44:30,380 --> 00:44:34,040
officer referring to the chickens as products terminology

1018
00:44:34,040 --> 00:44:36,340
is so important and we've talked about this

1019
00:44:36,340 --> 00:44:40,400
on other live panels is that um not

1020
00:44:40,400 --> 00:44:44,420
only was officer referring to them as products

1021
00:44:44,420 --> 00:44:48,640
another witness talked about the facilities as processing

1022
00:44:48,640 --> 00:44:51,980
facilities instead of a slaughterhouse she didn't even

1023
00:44:51,980 --> 00:44:53,940
want to say the word slaughterhouse the defense

1024
00:44:53,940 --> 00:44:56,020
had to really press her to even say

1025
00:44:56,020 --> 00:45:00,080
the word slaughterhouse so or that the chickens

1026
00:45:00,080 --> 00:45:03,300
are slaughtered that it's instead of processing facility

1027
00:45:03,300 --> 00:45:05,960
so these terms are really important and now

1028
00:45:05,960 --> 00:45:08,480
that um the defense is going to present

1029
00:45:08,480 --> 00:45:10,360
their case the jury's going to hear the

1030
00:45:10,360 --> 00:45:13,720
other side of um the side that we're

1031
00:45:13,720 --> 00:45:16,440
seeing we were seeing with meeting jasmine today

1032
00:45:16,440 --> 00:45:20,200
that the individual lives that they're not that

1033
00:45:20,200 --> 00:45:22,760
chickens aren't just products they are lives and

1034
00:45:22,760 --> 00:45:24,800
that the the law is behind i do

1035
00:45:24,800 --> 00:45:26,780
want to make a second point is that

1036
00:45:26,780 --> 00:45:33,620
if the law is considering chickens and other

1037
00:45:33,620 --> 00:45:37,820
farm animals as property and that's what the

1038
00:45:37,820 --> 00:45:40,220
law is reflecting that's what we're up against

1039
00:45:40,220 --> 00:45:42,340
and you see it all coming to a

1040
00:45:42,340 --> 00:45:44,500
head in this trial are the jurors gonna

1041
00:45:44,500 --> 00:45:50,140
see the chickens as food or as individuals

1042
00:45:50,140 --> 00:45:55,280
that that shouldn't suffer and be harmed in

1043
00:45:55,280 --> 00:45:58,420
this industry and that and that they'll see

1044
00:45:58,420 --> 00:46:00,480
the whole other side of the chickens as

1045
00:46:00,480 --> 00:46:04,020
individuals so look forward to seeing how this

1046
00:46:04,020 --> 00:46:07,740
plays out all right thank you excellent points

1047
00:46:07,740 --> 00:46:10,260
uh we're also very appreciative to have an

1048
00:46:10,260 --> 00:46:12,060
attorney by the way i found out that

1049
00:46:12,060 --> 00:46:15,300
um the owner of the sanctuary the chicken

1050
00:46:15,300 --> 00:46:17,920
sanctuary is also an attorney so you're not

1051
00:46:17,920 --> 00:46:19,640
going to get away from us that quickly

1052
00:46:20,380 --> 00:46:23,540
tracy we need our attorneys all right tiffany

1053
00:46:23,540 --> 00:46:26,680
tiffany your final thoughts for today and i

1054
00:46:26,680 --> 00:46:28,960
just want to thank tracy and jasmine i've

1055
00:46:28,960 --> 00:46:31,340
i have never really until the last couple

1056
00:46:31,340 --> 00:46:33,240
of years when i've gone to sanctuaries i've

1057
00:46:33,240 --> 00:46:35,740
never been around chickens i didn't know how

1058
00:46:35,740 --> 00:46:37,640
sweet they are and that you can actually

1059
00:46:37,640 --> 00:46:41,180
hold them and that they actually know people

1060
00:46:41,180 --> 00:46:43,400
by sight or sound i had i had

1061
00:46:43,400 --> 00:46:46,160
no idea just sitting here watching her with

1062
00:46:46,160 --> 00:46:49,060
jasmine she's such a good chicken mama it

1063
00:46:49,060 --> 00:46:50,940
just reminded me of when i try and

1064
00:46:50,940 --> 00:46:52,740
hold my dog and he wants to get

1065
00:46:52,740 --> 00:46:56,240
down or you just forget and then you

1066
00:46:56,240 --> 00:47:00,120
keep hearing these words products and and it's

1067
00:47:00,120 --> 00:47:01,720
just i want to thank her for being

1068
00:47:01,720 --> 00:47:04,360
on with jasmine and i'm excited to see

1069
00:47:04,360 --> 00:47:06,680
the defense's case and see what they can

1070
00:47:06,680 --> 00:47:08,540
get through to the jury i think it's

1071
00:47:08,540 --> 00:47:11,120
going to be a very exciting week i

1072
00:47:11,120 --> 00:47:14,900
agree i think ultimately we have to get

1073
00:47:14,900 --> 00:47:17,540
back to the consumers none of this would

1074
00:47:17,540 --> 00:47:21,420
be happening if consumers weren't lining up to

1075
00:47:21,420 --> 00:47:25,080
eat chicken and um you know i realize

1076
00:47:25,080 --> 00:47:30,000
that compassion is curiosity having the curiosity the

1077
00:47:30,000 --> 00:47:33,560
courage to be curious about how that food

1078
00:47:33,560 --> 00:47:35,420
that you like ends up on your plate

1079
00:47:35,420 --> 00:47:38,480
and i drive like everybody else down my

1080
00:47:38,480 --> 00:47:41,420
local miracle mile and people are lined up

1081
00:47:41,420 --> 00:47:44,500
around the chicken especially and we all know

1082
00:47:44,500 --> 00:47:47,720
that there are now ad campaigns that are

1083
00:47:47,720 --> 00:47:51,200
so cynical featuring a cartoon cow saying eat

1084
00:47:51,200 --> 00:47:55,400
more chicken um this is well i think

1085
00:47:55,400 --> 00:47:58,780
it's sad honestly i think whoever came up

1086
00:47:58,780 --> 00:48:00,980
with that campaign probably thinks they're very clever

1087
00:48:00,980 --> 00:48:04,500
but i would say i feel sorry for

1088
00:48:04,500 --> 00:48:07,900
them um and here's somebody saying prayers for

1089
00:48:07,900 --> 00:48:11,520
zoe rosenberg um somebody said tracy is my

1090
00:48:11,520 --> 00:48:13,880
friend thank you for doing this it's debbie's

1091
00:48:13,880 --> 00:48:16,720
birthday by the way happy birthday debbie happy

1092
00:48:16,720 --> 00:48:20,500
birthday debbie and guys keep coming back guys

1093
00:48:20,500 --> 00:48:24,100
and gals uh we are mimicking what they

1094
00:48:24,100 --> 00:48:26,500
do on core tv what they do on

1095
00:48:26,500 --> 00:48:29,720
all the major networks covering trials as i

1096
00:48:29,720 --> 00:48:32,460
used to do on major networks including core

1097
00:48:32,460 --> 00:48:35,800
tv and cnn headline news hln but we

1098
00:48:35,800 --> 00:48:38,320
don't have the reach we rely on the

1099
00:48:38,320 --> 00:48:41,760
people watching to share share share share hit

1100
00:48:41,760 --> 00:48:43,740
that share button and go down there and

1101
00:48:43,740 --> 00:48:46,180
share to as many groups as possible because

1102
00:48:46,180 --> 00:48:50,100
there's a woman who is actually facing half

1103
00:48:50,100 --> 00:48:53,140
a decade behind bars and because she suffers

1104
00:48:53,140 --> 00:48:57,060
from lifelong illnesses it could potentially she says

1105
00:48:57,060 --> 00:48:59,180
be fatal she's willing to do that i

1106
00:48:59,180 --> 00:49:01,520
think we at at the very least can

1107
00:49:01,520 --> 00:49:03,220
be willing to hit that share button over

1108
00:49:03,220 --> 00:49:04,840
and over and over again we're going to

1109
00:49:04,840 --> 00:49:07,120
see you next time we still don't know

1110
00:49:07,120 --> 00:49:10,520
whether this crazy case where the days change

1111
00:49:10,520 --> 00:49:13,320
i've covered many criminal charges i've trials i've

1112
00:49:13,320 --> 00:49:15,120
never seen one work when we're going to

1113
00:49:15,120 --> 00:49:17,100
